S&P 500 Yield - Looking Good

As we know, when prices rise, yields fall. Bond prices have been supported by safe haven buying at a time when the US Federal Reserve has been increasing interest rates, which in turn makes holding fixed income securities less valuable. Investors have sold the front end of the US yield curve with the yield on the 5 Year Treasury rising above 3% before equity market volatility saw safe haven buyers push yields down to 2.4%. The yield is currently 2.6%.

How Tech Companies Are Using Tax Cuts

The five US tech companies with the largest cash piles took advantage of President Trump’s tax reforms to spend more than $115bn in the first three quarters on buying back their own stock. The share buybacks so far this year by Apple, Alphabet, Cisco, Microsoft and Oracle, after the tax change came into force at the end of 2017, are nearly double what the companies spent in the whole of last year, making investors some of the biggest beneficiaries of a plan that was billed as a boost to US jobs.

Gold-backed ETFs have strongest inflows since 2017

World Gold Council: Global gold-backed ETFs holdings added 72.2 tonnes(t) to 2,481t in April. This is the strongest month of net inflows in more than a year. Growth in global holdings was led by significant North American and European inflows and supported by a small increase in Asia.
